An OPG, also known as a panoramic or wide-view x-ray, captures a single film displaying all teeth in the upper and lower jaw. It shows the number, position, and growth of both surfaced and non-surfaced teeth. Unlike close-up x-rays of individual teeth, an OPG can also detect problems with the jawbone and Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) that connects the jawbone to the head. An OPG can be requested for orthodontic treatment planning, wisdom teeth assessment, or a general overview of teeth and the supporting bone. Our Smart Pan imaging system in Chandigarh provides advanced 2D OPG x-ray services.
An Orthopantomography (OPG) or cone-beam CT (3D CBCT) examination requires no special preparation. The procedure is not painful but you need to remain still during the scan which can take between 20 to 40 seconds for a complete volume, also called a full mouth x-ray. For a regional scan that focuses on a specific area of the maxilla or mandible, it takes less than 10 seconds.
Before the examination, you may have to remove anything that may interfere with the imaging such as metal objects (jewellery, eyeglasses, hairpins, and hearing aids). Although removable dental work may need to be taken out. If there is any possibility that you may be pregnant, women should always inform their dentist or oral surgeon.
